19% increase in remittances

Despite deep recession worldwide, remittances sent home by overseas Pakistanis grew up by over 19% in the first 10 months of the current fiscal year. Inflows from the Middle Eastern countries registered a high growth of 34 per cent. The remittances caused relief as it showed that Pakistanis overseas still had their jobs. Gilani agrees to convene all-parties conference

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani revealed that rebels masquerading as religious Taliban in the country’s north-west had a ‘foreign agenda’, and said the present war on them would go on until their surrender. His call received a mixed reception with opposition calls for more information and a prominent government ally and one-time Taliban sympathiser dissociating from newly launched military operation in the Malakand division.

Pakistan working on unmanned aerial vehicle

After years of seeing U.S. drones operate along its Afghan border, Pakistan is working on its own Predator-like unmanned aerial vehicle to undertake the same mission. Pakistan’s air force and government-owned defense conglomerate, the National Engineering and Scientific Commission, are flight-testing a new-design aircraft to be equipped with a NESCom-designed laser designator and laser-guided missiles. The Burraq UAV is named for a winged horse creature in Islamic tradition, similar to Pegasus.

Security nightmare for Pakistan

Pakistan was bracing for a security nightmare as nearly 300 American builders arrived in the capital to do renovation work at the US Embassy here. The US already has consulates in most provincial capitals and it is unclear in which other cities these additional consulates would be constructed. With Pakistan grappling with terrorism, and the prevalent strong anti-US feelings, the Americans are left with no choice but to heighten security.

Display of real Pakistan

Nasir Khan and Ayesha Khan have decided to make a documentary about life in Pakistan. The documentary was scheduled to play next month, but Ayesha said it was too important of a film to wait so long to show it. Director Nasir, who lives in Pakistan said the film is important for audiences abroad and for people in the country. Nasir held screenings in Pakistan and got positive responses.

The plight of Pakistanis fleeing troubled Swat Valley reflects the hard echoes conditions in such hard-pressed regions as Darfur and Congo. The government pressed its weeks-old military campaign against Taliban insurgents and said its troops had killed about 700 militants. 180 militants killed

Between 180 and 200 insurgents were killed in the last 24 hours in a fierce military offensive to push Taliban fighters out of Pakistan’s northwestern Swat valley. The military has been in the are since late last month after Taliban fighters advanced to within 100 kilometres of Islamabad despite a February peace deal. Taliban under pressure from tribal rival

A top leader of the Pakistani Taliban, slapped in March with a $5 million bounty by the United States, is wanted worldwide. The real danger Baitullah Mehsud faces may be an emerging rival from his local tribe in northwestern Pakistan. Mr. Mehsud commands one of the three major pockets of Taliban fighters in Pakistan.

Pakistan defeats India

Defending champions India were defeated by arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening league match of the 8th Asia Cup hockey. Pakistan scored through Haseem Khan (33rd), Rehan Butt (36th) and Sohail Abbas (54th) while Prabhjot Singh (15th) and Rajpal Singh (45th) replied for India. India has to beat China to qualify for the semi finals.

Three-time former champions Pakistan pulled off a face-saving 1-1 draw with China with just 40 seconds remaining in their opening Asia Cup tie at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium held on Saturday. China had beaten Pakistan in the last Asia Cup in 2007 in Chennai. In the 70th minute, Akhtar Ali scored from close range when the Chinese defenders failed to clear in their semi-circle.

Suspected US missile strike kills 6

Pakistani officials have reported that a suspected U.S. missile strike killed six people near the Afghan border. Two intelligence officials say that the attack targeted a former government building in South Waziristan, a border region considered a stronghold for both the Taliban and al-Qaida. The identity of the victims is known.
